International Day of Co-operatives

Co-operative enterprises achieve sustainable development for all.

This year, International Co-operative Day, to be celebrated on 5 July, will have the theme of “Co-operative enterprises achieve sustainable development for all.” Concern for the community is one of the co-operative movement’sfounding values and, as such, the need to sustainably safeguard favourable living conditions for communities underpins all co-operatives’ operations and vision. In a general sense, sustainability is the capacity to support, maintain or endure. Since the 1980s, the concept of sustainability has evolved to mean the integration of environmental, economic and social dimensions. Co-operatives here again are the forerunners of modern sustainability. By placing human need at their centre, they respond to today’s crises of sustainability and deliver a distinctive form of “shared value”.

Quebec City, February 13, 2013 – The first International Summit of Cooperatives held last fall was so successful that another one is being organized for next year. The second Summit will take place in Quebec City, Canada, from October 6–9, 2014.

Desjardins Group and the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) will be teaming up again for this major gathering of the cooperative and mutual community.“We must continue to build on the success of this first International Summit of Cooperatives,” said Monique F. Leroux, Chair of the Board, President and CEO of Desjardins Group. “Our goal is to create a forum for decision-makers from the world's top cooperatives and mutuals to discuss complex issues. We want cooperative and mutual leaders to leave the Summit with a wealth of new ideas that will help boost the performance of their organizations.”

International Year of Family Farming

The International Co-operative Alliance welcomes the declaration of 2014 as the UN International Year of Family Farming.

Family farming has a significant role in eradicating hunger and poverty, providing food security and nutrition, improving livelihoods, managing natural resources, protecting the environment, and achieving sustainable development, in particular in rural areas. These are goals and values shared by the co-operative movement and that, we believe, can best be achieved through co-operative enterprises. The International Co-operative Alliance supports the aims and activities of the UN International Year of Family Farming in particular as they relate to the promotion and development of co-operative enterprises and the creation of synergies with the UN International Year of Co-operatives 2012.
